Davis Bicycle Advisory Commission meeting (date, location different this time!)
Monday, August 22, 5:30–6:30 pm

US Bicycling Hall of Fame, 3rd and B Streets

BAC meetings offer residents the opportunity to voice any bike-related concerns to the city. This month’s special meeting is the last one with Tara Goddard, Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator for the City of Davis. Tara is leaving this month to begin a doctoral program at Portland State University. You can view the meeting agenda on the BAC web page which includes the position description for Tara’s replacement. The city does not expect to hire a replacement until early next year.

While the city conducts its search for a new Bike/Ped Coordinator, the essay about the position written by Jon Li when he ran for City Council in 2010 is of particular interest.

Davis Bicycles! board meeting will occur Monday evening shortly after the BAC meeting (described above). If you’re interested in attending, meet us at the USBHOF when the BAC meeting concludes, or at the east entrance to Bainer Hall on the UCD campus, which is usually locked after 6pm.

3rd/4th/E/F Highrise Parking Structure: meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday this week
The city is considering spending $15 million on a new, five-story parking garage with retail between 3rd, 4th, E and F Streets, to replace the city-owned, ground level parking area. (For background information, see the page on DavisWiki.org )

1. Community information meeting on 3rd/4th/E/F project
Tuesday, August 23, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Community Chambers, 23 Russell Boulevard
A meeting will be hosted by the City of Davis to discuss the work plan and scope of the City’s Downtown Parking and Access Plan, an effort to identify key issues relating to Downtown parking.

2. DDBA brown-bag lunch presentation
Wednesday, August 24, 12 noon – 1pm
Odd Fellows Hall, 415 2nd Street

The Davis Downtown Business Association will host this discussion. First city staff will make a brief presentation and address questions and comments regarding the proposed project design and schedule. Also presenting will be a representative from the Yackzan Group, a co-developer with the City for the project.

Note: The announcement from DDBA of the latter meeting included a photo of a retail/parking structure like the one being considered, taken “in Belmar, Colorado.” This is not the name of city, but a shopping mall district within the city of Lakewood (Denver metro area). The “Downtown Parking and Access Plan” may sound impressive. However, no such plan existed when the City Council voted 3–2 on July 19 to proceed with the 3rd/4th/E/F project. The idea for such a plan was initiated just prior to that meeting at the request of one council member.

Thanks to all who attended yesterday’s B&L Bike Shop Block Party!
We would like to thank B&L Bike Shop, Electra Bicycles, and all who came and participated. It was a fun event, with lots of brand new bicycles for folks to take on test rides. Over $400 raffle proceeds were raised for DB! and SaveAGallon.

23 months ago, we thought the Fifth Street redesign was a go. What’s the holdup?
A recent article (commentary by David Greenwald) on DavisVanguard.org gives some idea where things stand with this long-awaited traffic calming project for downtown Davis’s main east-west thoroughfare. A lively discussion by commenters follows after the end of the article.
