Answers from all six city council candidates on bicycling

Candidate Bike Questions

  1. The current public works budget is very tight and may have to be reduced. Yet a goal of the proposed Davis Bicycle plan is to increase bike mode share to 25% by 2012. What do you think is an equitable way to allocate the public works moneys to car, bicycle, and pedestrian projects? Specifically, should the proportion of funds to bike infrastructure be less than, equal to, or greater than the present bike mode share? ... than the desired bike mode share?
  2. Candidates' responses...Responses from Escamilla-Greenwald, Saylor, Souza, and Vergis

  3. The Bicycle Advisory Commission retroactively amended the most recent Davis Bicycle Plan to recommend opening access to the Route 40 bike path from the Dave Pelz Overcrossing as a major thoroughfare for commuters between Davis and Sacramento. The Bicycle Advisory Commission identified this capital improvement as one of its highest priorities. Nevertheless, the City staff has declined to apply for CalTrans Bicycle Transportation Account grants for this project which is on land owned and maintained by CalTrans and the City of Davis respectively. With gas prices at an all-time high, the stage is set for a marked increase in commuting to Sacramento by bicycle. If elected to the Davis City Council, would you follow the recommendations of the Bicycle Advisory Commission in general; and specifically, would you allocate funds to build bicycle access to the Route 40 bike path via the Dave Pelz overcrossing to promote bicycle commuting to Sacramento from north, east and south Davis in 2008?
  4. Candidates' responses...Responses from Escamilla-Greenwald, Saylor, Souza, and Vergis

  5. What do you know about bike parking problems in the downtown area, and needed improvements? What role do you see bicycles playing in support of downtown business, considering the expense of building more car parking, and the shortage of on-street parking for cars?
  6. Candidates' responses...Responses from Escamilla-Greenwald, Saylor, Souza, and Vergis

  7. Is it practical to provide more off-street bike paths in existing urban areas? If so, please list some of the most likely locations in Davis where this could be done.
  8. Candidates' responses...Responses from Escamilla-Greenwald, Saylor, Souza, and Vergis

  9. Please list some of the locations in Davis where bicyclists need a better designed, safer route than what is available. Give any specifics that you think are important, such as traffic calming, giving bikes more space on streets, etc.
  10. Candidates' responses...Responses from Escamilla-Greenwald, Saylor, Souza, and Vergis

  11. In the discussion about closing Emerson Jr. High, some parents felt that it was too far for current Emerson students from the west side to bike all the way to Holmes. Others suggested that obstacles to biking this distance could be overcome. What are your thoughts on this? Would you favor instituting a parking charge for high school students in the Vets-DHS parking lot to promote increased cycling?
  12. Candidates' responses...Responses from Escamilla-Greenwald, Saylor, Souza, and Vergis

  13. How far do you live from City Hall? Do you ride a bike? If so, how often and what is your bike mode share for all trips in Davis? Describe efforts (if any) that you take to drive less often (or shorter distances).
