Existing Fifth Street with four lanes between B and L Streets (left), and the proposed redesign (right)
In addition to the new lane configuration pictured above between B and L Streets, bike lanes would be striped
between A and B Streets, where sufficient space exists for bike lanes alongside the two existing traffic
lanes in either direction.
In the initial phase, only the lane stripes on the street, and traffic signals at F and G Streets
would be changed. All the proposed changes fit within the existing curbs. Landscaping outside the curbs,
including street trees would be unaffected. Subsequent phases of the project would add raised medians in some of the
blocks between B and L Streets, like those in the envisioned D Street intersection pictured here.

The initial project is expected
to cost $25,000 to restripe the lanes, and up to $500,000 (but more likely closer to $200,000) to reconfigure
the traffic signals at F and G Streets. The latter would help traffic throughput by cutting about 30 seconds from
the wait time at these intersections. The protected left turn lanes (pictured above) make this possible.
